What causes menopause?
Menopause—the cessation of a woman’s periods—occurs when the body produces less estrogen and progesterone as a result of the natural aging process. Most women begin to experience symptoms of menopause in their 40s, with periods ending completely by the time she’s in her early to mid 50s. A woman is said to be in menopause when she hasn’t had a period for 12 consecutive months.
The time leading up to menopause is more correctly called “perimenopause” or sometimes “premenopause.” The symptoms associated with menopause are caused by the change in her hormone levels.
What symptoms are associated with menopause?
Menopause can cause a range of symptoms, and not every woman will experience every symptom. The severity of symptoms can also vary from one woman to another. The most common symptoms associated with menopause include:
- Irregular or abnormal periods, including spotting between periods, missed periods, very light periods, and very heavy periods
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
- Mood changes, including irritability and sadness or depression
- Vaginal dryness that can cause painful intercourse and an increased risk of urinary tract infections
Once you’re in menopause, you’ll also be at an increased risk for some serious medical conditions, including:
- Heart disease
- Heart attack
- Osteoporosis
How can Dr E Peter Anzaldo help me manage my menopause symptoms?
Menopause can’t be cured, but there are plenty of treatments that can help reduce and relieve symptoms so you can lead a healthier, more comfortable life. Some treatments focus on relieving individual symptoms. For instance, lubricants can be useful in relieving vaginal dryness and irritation, and some estrogen-based products can also increase the production of natural lubricants and Dr E Peter Anzaldo now offers the state of the art FemiLift procedure that can relieve vaginal dryness.
Other women opt for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) using bioidentical hormones to replace the hormones that are no longer being produced by the body. HRT can be useful in treating multiple symptoms by “rebalancing” your body’s natural hormone levels. HRT can also help reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition that causes reduced bone mass and increases your risk for fractures.
What are bioidentical hormones?
Bioidentical hormones are lab-created (synthetic) hormones that have the same chemical structure as your natural estrogen and progesterone. That means your body uses those hormones and processes them the same way it uses natural hormones, so your risks are reduced during treatment. You’ll have regular blood tests to help manage your dose and ensure that it’s optimized for your needs.
